The Marilyn Monroe Dress

Pam Marlin 2018

Marilyn Monroe made history on May 19, 1962, when she sang "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy in a breathtaking, provocative flesh-colored gown at Madison Square Garden for his 45th birthday. When Ripley's Believe It or Not! bought the garment from Julien's Auctions for $4.8 million on November 17, 2016, they set a new Guinness World Records record for the most expensive dress sold at auction. The photos below are from my visit to Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum in St. Augustine in March 2018 to see the historic dress.

Jean Louis, an Academy Award-winning designer, created the "glittering "beads and skin" dress worn by Marilyn Monroe for her breathless rendition of "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy in Madison Square Garden in 1962. The dress, which gave new meaning to the term form-fitting, was designed to be so tight that Mr. Louis later said he had to have Miss Monroe sewn into it." 1
